Sunday 22nd November 2009. Dunfermline (Queen Anne School) ‘Mud mud glorious mud, nothing quite like it for cooling the blood’. The second of this season’s Scottish East District Cross Country League race saw us all doing our best impression of a hippopotamus. Five senior men from MDAC; Dermot, Alex, Craig, Gordon and Stewart ran under the Team East Lothian banner. Grant Noble from Dunbar made up the sixth man in the team.

You know the summer is well and truly over when you are digging out the XC shoes and preparing flasks of tea, but the weather was surprisingly good for the first XC of the winter season. The day started very early with MDAC helping set out the course at 10am, after hundreds of stakes and miles of tape the course was done.

The race involves a bit of urban orienteering with each runner given a map of Musselburgh. At each of the twelve turf cutting stations the runners had to collect a letter, with the twelve letters making up the well known Musselburgh phrase, ITS AW OOR AIN ! Under glorious blue skies the seven runners set off from Pinkie playing fields. After station 1, the runners could then visit the other eleven in any order.

The handicap race is over 1.63 miles, round the Crookston Road loop. Thirteen runners shivered in the heat of the Scottish summer, waiting for the off. First home was Roland Oliver (much to the chagrin of Jan). Tony out sprinted Alex and Craig for the next three places. Good night at the Ravelston, with birthday boy Alex getting to blow out some candles. Results

The first running of the East Lothian 5k was a nicely low key affair, with just six runners, four from MDAC, one from HELP and one from Dunbar . The race was being held as part of the East Lothian Championship which until now had been the sole preserve of the junior athletes. This year a more ‘senior’ field lined up for the 5k with Alex Oliver on his fortieth birthday, the baby of the pack. Roger set us off with a ready steady go and off we trotted / jogged or ran. The course was a simple out and back along the old railway track path to Whitecraig. At the turn, Alex was just out in front, a lead he held to the end. A mention for Mike Howard who finished in a very commendable fourth place in his very first 5k.

Last night saw the last in the East Lothian Summer Series, held at the John Muir Country park in Dunbar. The race itself was about 5.5k, along sandy trails through woods. Fine evening for a run. Maybe too breezy for the BBQ after. As ever there was a good compliment of runners from Musselburgh, Dunbar, Haddington and Jog Scotland. The MDAC contingent was made up of Jan, Ian and myself.

Four of us (Graeme, Alex, Craig and myself) set off on Wednesday evening to run in the annual 11 mile, Carfraemill to Gifford hill run (not a race), hosted by HELP. About twenty runners from the three East Lothian clubs, assembled under very dark and threatening skies, at 6.30 pm in Gifford to get the bus down to Carfraemill. By the time we got down to Carfraemill, the weather was perfect for running, not too hot, with a nice breeze to help keep you cool.
