DOE at Garden Party

Hundreds of young achievers from across Scotland were invited to the Palace of Holyroodhouse in early July, including several people from East Lothian.

Young people who completed The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) through Dunbar Grammar, Preston Lodge High School and North Berwick High School, along with community based groups from Gifford, Haddington and North Berwick received their Gold Award certificate from Josh Littlejohn (co-founder of ‘Social Bite’, a social business helping tackle social problems e.g. homelessness), in the presence of HRH The Earl of Wessex.

The Gold Award Presentation (GAP) is a celebration and recognition of the group’s achievements in their Gold DofE programme. The GAP is a unique event and a fitting culmination to mark the hard work, determination and perseverance required.
The group have worked tirelessly through the five sections of the DofE programme, choosing a diverse programme of activities, for a minimum of 12 months to achieve their Gold Award. Volunteering included helping run Yester Community Movie Association; working in a charity shop; being a Young Sports Ambassador; working as a Brownie Guide Leader and helping at a library.

Activities for the Physical section included surfing/body boarding, running, karate, hockey and ballet. The group have developed Skills such as cooking, sports leadership training, zoology classification, gardening and playing musical instruments. They have all taken part in a 4 day walking or canoeing Expedition in the UK, in areas such as the Cairngorms and Northumbria. Each member of the group also took part in a 5 day Residential including a trip to France learning the language and culture, environmental conservation work in Glencoe, a Space Summer School at King.s College London, an outdoors activities and exam study camp at Nethy Bridge and a community project in China.
